The failure of inner-city schools to teach children to read is among the most serious social problems that our country faces."

~ Dr. William Labov - Professor of Linguistics and Psychology

In certain states government officials have found they can use the rate of illiteracy to help calculate future prison needs. 85 percent of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate. More than 60 percent of all prison inmates are functionally illiterate. Illiteracy and crime are closely related.

The Department of Justice states, "The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure." Over 70% of inmates in America's prisons cannot read above a fourth grade level. 16 to 19 year old girls at the poverty level, with below average literary skills, are 6 times more likely to have out-of-wedlock children than their reading counterparts.

IT IS NOT COMPLICATED! If you have failed to give children confidence that they can learn to read by the time they are 8 or 9 years old, it is very difficult for them to academically recover. What happens to your child if they can't read?

THE CYCLE OF ILLITERACY:

-Children who do not read have lesser of a bond and emotional and social connection with their parents than those who do.

-Children will have a limited vocabulary and will not be able to express themselves.

-They will fall behind in school making them social and academically inept. Eventually many students will drop out of school. 60% of urban school children do not graduate from high school. Forty percent of those who do read at only a 4th grade level.

-Without a proper education children join gangs, commit crimes, have sex, use drugs as a way to fit in and are more likely to engage in criminal and anti-social behavior.

-85 percent of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate. Because of their criminal record and/or anti-social behavior getting a job is much more difficult and this behavior repeats itself. Leading to a dysfunctional lifestyle.
